Reports To: Program Manager / Clinical Supervisor

Job Summary

The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) is a direct care paraprofessional responsible for the safety and structure of the therapeutic environment. This role provides continuous supervision, emotional support, and behavioral interventions to clients in residential, inpatient, or partial hospitalization settings, working closely with the clinical and nursing staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and document client behavior, mood, and interactions continuously, reporting critical changes or high-risk indicators to the licensed clinical staff immediately.
  • Implement individual treatment plans and behavioral protocols as designed by licensed clinicians (LCSW, LPC, etc.).
  • Actively participate in and co-facilitate psychoeducational, recreational, or therapeutic groups as assigned.
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and therapeutic milieu through adherence to program rules and active supervision.
  • Assist in crisis intervention and de-escalation, utilizing approved techniques to manage challenging behavior and ensure client stability.
  • Conduct regular rounds, assist clients with organizational tasks, and support adherence to unit schedules.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a behavioral health-related field (Psychology, Sociology, etc.) is preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year of direct care experience in a psychiatric, substance use, or residential behavioral health setting.
  • Certification in Crisis Prevention and Intervention (e.g., CPI, Handle With Care) required, typically within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Ability to demonstrate empathy, set therapeutic limits, and maintain professional boundaries.
