Reports To: Crisis Program Manager / Clinical Director
Job Summary
The Crisis Intervention Specialist provides immediate, short-term support, assessment, and stabilization services to individuals experiencing an acute behavioral health crisis. This role is focused on rapid risk assessment, de-escalation, safety planning, and facilitating a warm hand-off to the appropriate level of follow-up care.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond immediately to crises via phone, tele-health, or mobile outreach (depending on the program model).
- Conduct rapid and comprehensive crisis assessment and triage, including thorough screening for suicide, homicide, and self-harm risk.
- Utilize advanced de-escalation techniques and therapeutic communication to stabilize the individual’s emotional state.
- Develop a clear, actionable safety plan with the client and their support system, outlining immediate steps for maintaining safety.
- Coordinate disposition, which may include facilitating voluntary or involuntary hospitalizations or linking to intensive outpatient services.
- Maintain highly accurate, time-sensitive, and confidential documentation of all crisis contacts, assessments, and dispositions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related behavioral health field.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working in a crisis response setting (e.g., crisis hotline, emergency department, mobile crisis team, or urgent care center).
- Completion of specialized training or certification in crisis intervention and risk management (e.g., CISM, ASIST, or CPI).
- Exceptional ability to remain calm, objective, and effective while managing high-acuity, high-stress situations.
