Job Summary
The Detox Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) / Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) provides direct patient care and medical monitoring to individuals undergoing acute substance withdrawal. This essential role focuses on the accurate administration of prescribed medications, continuous patient monitoring, and reporting all changes in patient status to the supervising RN or physician.
Key Responsibilities
- Accurately administer and document prescribed medications according to the treatment plan and established detox protocols (e.g., CIWA, COWS regimens), under the direction of an RN or medical provider.
- Perform frequent and meticulous patient monitoring, including taking and recording vital signs and performing standardized withdrawal assessments (e.g., CIWA-Ar and COWS).
- Observe patients closely for physical or behavioral signs of acute complications (e.g., seizures, delirium tremens, suicidal ideation) and immediately report any critical changes to the supervising RN or Physician.
- Assist the Registered Nurse with admissions, transfers, and discharges, ensuring continuity of care and accurate medical documentation.
- Maintain the safety, security, and cleanliness of the detox unit and assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) as needed.
Qualifications
- Current, active state license as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN).
- Graduate of an accredited School of Practical/Vocational Nursing.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in a medical setting, preferably in a detox, substance abuse, or medical-surgical unit.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
- Demonstrated competency in accurate medication administration and proficiency in using withdrawal assessment scales.
