Job Summary

The Detox Registered Nurse (RN) provides specialized, high-acuity medical and nursing care to patients undergoing acute withdrawal from substances, including alcohol, opioids, and benzodiazepines. This critical role ensures patient medical stabilization through continuous monitoring, precise medication administration, and swift intervention for emergent withdrawal complications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct frequent, comprehensive medical and withdrawal assessments, accurately utilizing standardized tools such as the CIWA-Ar (Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment of Alcohol Scale) and COWS (Clinical Opiate Withdrawal Scale).
  • Administer medications strictly according to physician orders and established detoxification protocols, monitoring for therapeutic effect and adverse reactions.
  • Continuously monitor vital signs and neurological status, recognizing and responding rapidly to acute medical emergencies such as seizures, delirium tremens (DTs), and hypertensive crisis.
  • Collaborate closely with the physician and clinical team to adjust the detox regimen based on assessment findings and patient response.
  • Provide empathetic, trauma-informed care and psychoeducation to patients regarding the withdrawal process and post-detox treatment planning.
  • Maintain complete and accurate medical and nursing documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).

Qualifications

  • Current, active state license as a Registered Nurse (RN). BSN preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in an acute medical detox unit, emergency room, or critical care setting with a focus on substance withdrawal management.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is highly desirable.
  • Expertise and proven competency in using standardized withdrawal assessment tools (CIWA-Ar and COWS).
  • Strong knowledge of psychopharmacology related to addiction and withdrawal management.
