Reports To: Chief Executive Officer (CEO) / Chief Medical Officer (CMO)

Job Summary

The Medical Director of Psychiatry is the senior physician leader responsible for the comprehensive medical and psychiatric oversight of all clinical programs and services. This role ensures the highest standards of psychiatric care, leads all medical staff (psychiatrists, PMHNPs, RNs), manages risk, and provides strategic direction on evidence-based medical treatments and protocols.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Leadership: Serve as the final authority on complex medical-psychiatric decisions, setting the standard for diagnostic accuracy, pharmacotherapy management, and integrated care across the organization.
  • Medical Staff Management: Recruit, supervise, and mentor all medical providers (Psychiatrists, PMHNPs), managing credentialing, privileging, and performance evaluations to maintain a high-quality medical team.
  • Protocol & Compliance: Develop and approve all medical protocols, including admission and discharge criteria, detoxification regimens, and prescribing guidelines, ensuring strict compliance with DEA, state, and accreditation standards.
  • Quality & Risk Management: Lead medical quality assurance and risk management initiatives, reviewing critical incidents, participating in mortality and morbidity reviews, and overseeing peer review processes.
  • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with the Executive and Clinical Directors to develop strategic goals, evaluate new medical technologies or treatment modalities (e.g., TMS, ECT), and ensure fiscal responsibility of medical services.
  • Patient Care: Maintain a limited patient caseload to remain clinically active, provide direct consultation, and model best-practice patient care.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
  • Successful completion of a residency program in Psychiatry.
  • Current, active, and unrestricted state medical license.
  • Board Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).
  • Current DEA registration and state controlled substance registration.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in clinical practice and 3 years of formal administrative/leadership experience in a psychiatric or behavioral health setting.
