Reports To: Clinical Director / MAT Program Coordinator

Job Summary

The Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Specialist provides integrated behavioral and care coordination services for clients receiving medication for substance use disorders (primarily Opioid Use Disorder/OUD). This essential role promotes treatment adherence, delivers specialized counseling, and coordinates seamless communication between the MAT prescriber, behavioral health team, and the patient.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized individual and group counseling focused on MAT topics, including adherence, integration with behavioral therapy, and risk management.
  • Coordinate scheduling, urine drug screening, and communication between the patient and the MAT prescriber (MD, NP, PA) to ensure timely follow-ups and medication adjustments.
  • Conduct regular screenings and assessments to monitor for relapse risk, potential diversion concerns, and medication side effects.
  • Facilitate thorough patient education regarding the function, benefits, risks, and responsibilities associated with the MAT regimen (e.g., buprenorphine, naltrexone, methadone).
  • Work closely with the case management team to secure necessary resources (housing, employment) that support sustained recovery while on MAT.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records documenting all MAT-related services and communication.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Nursing, or a health-related field. Master’s degree is highly preferred.
  • Current state licensure or certification as a behavioral health professional (LPC, LCSW, LMHC, or CADC) is highly desirable.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working in a MAT or Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) setting.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the pharmacology and evidence-based practice of FDA-approved medications for OUD and AUD.
  • Strong ability to communicate complex medical and clinical information clearly to patients.
