Reports To: Nurse Manager/Director of Nursing

Job Summary

The Psychiatric Registered Nurse (RN) provides specialized nursing care for patients with mental health and substance use disorders across the lifespan. This role is crucial for ensuring patient safety, administering medications, managing the therapeutic milieu, and coordinating physical and behavioral healthcare.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately administer medications and monitor patients for therapeutic response, side effects, and adverse reactions, specifically related to psychopharmacology.
  • Conduct thorough, holistic nursing assessments (including physical health, mental status, and risk for harm) upon admission and throughout treatment.
  • Manage and maintain a safe, therapeutic milieu, utilizing effective communication and setting appropriate boundaries.
  • Implement physician/provider orders, complete treatment interventions, and accurately document all patient care activities in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Utilize crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to manage behavioral crises and maintain unit stability.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, and necessary discharge planning.

Qualifications

  • Current, active state license as a Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). BSN highly preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in an acute inpatient psychiatric unit, residential treatment center, or related behavioral health setting.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; certification in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing (PMH-BC) is a plus.
  • Demonstrated skill in risk assessment, triage, and rapid response to medical and psychiatric emergencies.
