Job Summary
The Substance Abuse Counselor / SUD Counselor provides specialized counseling and clinical support to individuals and families struggling with substance use disorders (SUD). This role involves comprehensive assessment, individualized treatment planning, and delivering evidence-based counseling focused on achieving and maintaining long-term recovery.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive Substance Use Disorder (SUD) assessments utilizing recognized placement criteria (e.g., ASAM criteria).
- Facilitate both individual and group counseling sessions using evidence-based modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI).
- Develop, implement, and review measurable, individualized treatment and recovery plans in collaboration with the client and interdisciplinary team.
- Provide psychoeducation on the disease of addiction, relapse prevention strategies, and essential coping skills.
- Maintain detailed, accurate, and timely clinical documentation in compliance with all state, federal, and ethical standards.
- Coordinate with case managers and medical staff to ensure continuity of care and address co-occurring needs.
Qualifications
- Minimum of an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a relevant human services or behavioral health field (e.g., Counseling, Social Work, Addiction Studies).
- Current certification or licensure as a Substance Abuse Counselor (CADC, SUDC, or equivalent state credential) is required.
- Minimum of 2 years of direct counseling experience in a SUD treatment setting (outpatient, IOP, or residential).
- Familiarity with 12-Step programs, recovery support systems, and harm reduction principles.
